Stil 1827 has incorporated a variety of effective eco-friendly practices to protect our natural heritage.

This charming 1827 house forms part of Waterland-Oudeman’s unique cultural tapestry. As the facade is protected under Flanders National Heritage and we wanted to renovate with minimal environmental impact, we had to seek out creative solutions. Our team purposely retained all the original structural elements to minimise waste and preserve our village’s legacy.

Overview

We used eco-friendly methods to repurpose recycled materials from the site and surrounding area

Insulation

Most of the wall insulation has been recycled from other buildings in the village and the local area.

Roof Tiles

Authentic roof tiles from the original 1827 construction have been diligently restored and re-used.

Floorboards

Original wooden floorboards have been installed as parquet flooring in the upstairs rooms.

Slate

An enormous bluestone slate from the former hallway now takes centre stage in our leafy garden terrace.

Bricks

Leftover bricks from the dismantled interior walls have been cleaned and reused in our garden and other local construction projects.

Energy Efficiency

To optimise our energy efficiency rating, we installed high-performance PIR insulation and eco-friendly mineral wool comprised of 80% recycled materials. Located in the floors, roof, and walls, this insulation exceeds all legal standards defined by local building codes.

To minimise environmental waste, we sourced most insulation from the original building and other regional renovations.

Renewable Energy

Stil 1827 is one of a select few regional B&Bs to run entirely on renewable energy. Most of our power is geothermal, with two 115-metre-deep holes extracting heat from the front and side gardens. This steamy subterranean power passes through a heat pump to supply 100% renewable energy to the house.

Solar panels on the side of the property generate enough power to keep the heat pump running during daylight hours.

Bike Charging

Guests are welcome to use our on-site bike charging stations.
